Liberal Democrats will work hard to ensure Wirral Council can cope with the coming strains and pressures.
We will champion value for money and challenge waste such as Labour’s spin doctor on the rates.
The hasty and unfair removal of Government funding places services in our communities at risk.
Every Liberal Democrat councillor elected will strive to ensure that in future Wirral Council will improve by:
Giving local people a greater say
The Council must give people opportunities to shape their services in their local communities. Wirral’s Constituency committees need their own budgets to bring about real results.
Money from the sale of Council assets must be ploughed back into our communities.
People need the full facts to respond to the Council’s consultations and enough time to express their views. The rush to make hasty and ill-thought-out decisions causes needless distress. Users of Girtrell Court this year, along with The Lyndale School last year, have seen this process at first hand.
The Council must learn from its mistakes.
Leaving nobody out
Bringing health & social services together must create seamless services in the interests of all age groups and health and social care users.
We need to ensure high quality care to protect older people in care homes.
We support youth facilities accessible to young people throughout Wirral, thus avoiding concentrating resources into central Birkenhead.
We do not want our local schools taken out of local hands and turned into businesses that exclude parents from holding academies to account for their children’s education
A better maintained road network, with more 20 MPH zones, is needed to improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers.
We will protect the environment; we are not prepared to be bribed to allow the risks posed by fracking in Wirral whilst renewable alternatives are available.
Reaping wider benefits
New housing will bring in new income from the ‘New Homes Bonus’ and extra council tax, but any new developments must meet local housing need rather than further the narrow interests of developers.
We must aim to secure community engagement, with early consultation on plans to meet current and emerging housing needs.
Wirral needs to play a full part in the growth and redevelopment of our region.
The new region can only work well with the confidence of all the councils.
The new regional Mayor needs to be held to account, only exercising power in a truly democratic system with well developed checks and balances.
