Wirral Liberal Democrats took to the streets of Wirral at the weekend, collecting signatures for a petition against the proroguing of Parliament.
The Prime Minister is attempting to shut down Parliament by any means he can at this critical time in the nation’s history, stoking up the divisions which have split the country in half since the ill-advised 2016 advisory Referendum.
Local Lib Dem activists, including Wirral West candidate Andy Corkhill, gave people the chance to register their disapproval of the attempt to stifle parliamentary scrutiny of the government’s no-deal Brexit plans.
Any Corkhill said, “Boris Johnson knows the people would not choose a No Deal, and that the people’s representatives wouldn’t allow it. Wirral voted to Remain three years ago and by shutting down Parliament, he is trying to silence our voice and force a disastrous No Deal on the British people.”
Liberal Democrats, working alongside other parties, have exposed the Government’s lack of backstop plans and their intention to release a watered-down version of the leaked Yellowhammer document, which warned the Cabinet of the disastrous consequences for ordinary people of crashing out of the EU without a deal.
“Places such as Heswall and West Kirby have traditionally been Conservative strongholds, but the recent EU elections saw the Liberal Democrats surge ahead of the Tories in areas like these,” Allan Brame said.
